GIS Education Weekly: Space Archaeology Meets Crowdsourcing; 2016 Geospatial Skills Competition Meets Open Source

Space Archaeology for Everyone!

Parcak's book
Satellite Remote
Sensing for Archaeology
I noted Sarah Parcak last fall when she was awarded the 2016 TED Prize of $1M. This past week at the TED conference, she explained what she'll be doing with the funds. She'll be building a platform to allow anyone with a smart phone to look at processed satellite images to identify archaeological features. This will be another opportunity to help the world understand the value of remote sensing.

Moodle Supports Location-based Learning

Moodle is an open source learning management system. I was surprised to learn it has "conditional display based on location," what is called the Moodle GPS Course Format. A Moodle News article from 2014 on the plugin from the German company ka:media describes some applications:
Imagine the ability to hide materials until a student was in proximity to a specific place! Scavenger hunts, virtual tours of cities, geocaching challenges…I can think of a couple of cool ways to use this GPS format. With a responsive or Mobile theme this could be a really awesome and amazing way to bring interactivity to your blended classroom.
We can already do those things with existing LBS services, tools and APIs, but this implementation integrates them into learning via an LMS. If I understand correctly, the "Format," first announced in 2013, comes as part of a free set of tools and services from ka:media and as a download from Moodle.org. A version updated for Moodle 3.0 is expected in March. I could not find any documentation of implementations; if you know of any, I'd love to hear about them.

GIS Education Weekly: Must Students use Esri Software for Challenge.gov Contest?

Visualize Your Water: A Citizen Science Challenge for High School Students

The challenge, for high school students who live in the Great Lakes basin and Chesapeake Bay watershed, was announced last year. Now the event is actually open. It's supported by a coalition of government agencies, educational organizations and Esri. Winners receive money, publication of their maps in an Esri book, funding to attend the 2016 Esri Education GIS Conference. The press release states students will use Esri software.
In this educational competition, students will use digital mapping technology from Esri (a leading geographic technology company) with data from the USGS, EPA, and other sources to analyze local water quality. They will then create a map that tells a story about the problem and suggests viable solutions.
Further exploration suggests students need not use Esri software. The FAQ includes this question:
Do I have to use Esri mapping software?
No, students are not required to use Esri mapping software. However, the visualization must include a map that can be viewed online.
Further exploration reveals GIS software must be used. The challenge website states:
GIS software must be used for submissions.
I contacted both USGS (who put out the press release) and the Challenge contact asking for clarification.
Can you clarify exactly what sort of software can/must be used? And, what sort of map created? Can the map be static?
Three people (two from EPA and one from USGS) joined me on the phone earlier this week to confirm:
  • The online map can be static or interactive. The winning entries will do the best job "telling the story."
  • Students can use any software they like to create the map; it doesn't even need to be GIS software. Organizers want educators to know that ArcGIS Online is available free to use via ConnectED.

GIS Education Weekly: GeoTech Skills Competition, AAAS, Digital Humanities Minor

2015 Undergraduate Geospatial Technology Skills Competition Recap

Vince DiNoto, Director of the National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence (The GeoTech Center) and his team shared some details from this year's competition.
  • 13 total entries
  • 7 from universities, 6 from community colleges
  • All participants used ArcGIS desktop
  • GeoTech Center covered  travel expenses for the student finalist to URISA's GIS Pro
  • URISA provided conference registrations for the finalists
  • Both organization provided judges for the two rounds
Looking ahead, the GeoTech Center will host a webinar featuring three of the four student finalists on December 16. There are plans for the 2016 competition including webinars in the spring semester to help instructors integrate the competition into their courses and some tweaks to the rules based on lessons learned.

GIS Open House at the Kauai Community College

The school received grant money (no word from whom) to build GIS courses. The hit at the GIS open house, attended by middle schoolers, was the Augmented Reality Sandbox.
“I took one of these Geographic Information Systems courses,” said Major Victor Aguilar, director of the Waimea High School JrROTC program. “The software is free, you just need to build it. But we can use these programs for some of the JrROTC training programs like creating topographic maps.”
COP 21 UNICEF Map
A digital mapping project called ‘Act Now For Tomorrow,’ which was recently launched by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is helping young people around the world identify climate issues in their communities and find ways to address them.
The story UN story didn't include a link, but I found the actual map. Each marker on the Google Map leads to a report from a team at that location revealing local climate change impacts. I understand some 500 youth from 65 countries participated.

Upcoming GeoTech Center Webinars

Coming May 20: Integrating a Degree Qualifications Profile within a Geo-related Program Webinar

Does "Degree Qualification Profile" give you pause? I Googled it since it's a new term to me.

There's a new, free webinar each third Wednesday of the month.

Out with Old Career Pathways; In with the New

The old GeoTech Center Geospatial Careers Pathways Guide document (2009?) just resurfaced on Facebook (pdf), but a new one is expected on the GeoTech Center website soon. It's not a document of which I was aware.

GIS Education Weekly: Esri ConnectED Update, Geodesign, International Map Year

Esri ConnectED Schools: 1000

States and Districts in the Conterminous U.S.
with Esri Education Licenses. Alaska and
Hawaii both have statewide licenses.
In a blog post Esri's Charlie Fitzpatrick provides an update on Esri's ConnectED program which promises ArcGIS Online for Organizations accounts to most every K-12 formal or informal educational organization in the U.S. Fun with GIS 171: Lighthouses shares that since launch in mid-2014 about 1000 educational organizations are on the map. The "lighthouses" in the title refer to what I'd call "reference implementations" or "cases studies" where those new to the use of ArcGIS Online might get some inspiration or guidance. All of the organizations, lighthouses, GeoMentors, requests for GeoMentors and more are on a story map. Fitzpatrick walked through resources for ConnectED users and supporters in a previous post.

Geospatial Projects High Schoolers to Intel Science Talent Search Semifinals

Two Sayville (NY) High School students who used geospatial technology in their projects are semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search.

In this introductory workshop [30 min Wednesday, January 21 at 2:00 PM Eastern]
, we will introduce the National Map Viewer as a way of acquiring LIDAR data. Participants will learn how to manipulate LIDAR data, create 3D visualizations using LIDAR data, and publish visualizations to ArcGIS Online as 3D Web Scene. Participants need an ArcGIS for organization account and ArcScene (with 3D analyst extension) in order to complete the exercise.
The National GeoTech Center will be presenting monthly free webinars on the third Wednesday of each month at 2:00 PM Eastern time.

2015 Undergraduate Geospatial Technology Skills Competition

This year finalists will go to the GIS-Pro & NWGIS 2015 Conference as URISA is a sponsor. New this year (see last year's rules in PDF):
  • no test, projects only
  • longer videos
  • two and four year geo students welcome
  • Esri and other tech welcome in projects
  • winners go to URISA GIS-Pro Conference not Esri UC
Last year's contest was ultimately cancelled. I for one asked for a fresh start for 2015 and am happy to say this is a fresh start.
